Halifax Holiday Matchmaker Facebook app
Are you the type of person that gets on a getaway every now and then? Are you the type of person that finds difficulty in choosing the next destination? Well this maybe the one solution you’ve been looking for. This is the Halifax Holiday Matchmaker, a Facebook app that chooses the best destination for your next vacation based on your friends, their preferences and the like.
Once you’ve given the permission to the app, it shows you this page that will more or less give you a glimpse of what you’ll be having if you take their vacation package. The page is divided into sections. First is the one seen above where you’re given a certain percentage compatibility with their recommended place — 80% as seen here.
Included in the recommendations is a suitable hotel that would best compliment the user’s overall experience in the said place. Conveniently included is a Google Map screenshot of where the place is for easier location. Then there’s a section where the app tells you how much you’d spend on certain activities, as seen below.
Conveniently, when planning a vacation like this, you’re likely to consider the weather in that particular place as to ensure that you’ll enjoy every moment spent there. And this app, doesn’t forget that fact and shows what weather you’re most likely to experience in the place, again as shown below.
Just remember that all of these, you could just avail if you get their Halifax Travel Money service. With that button seen all over the place, they made it pretty sure that you won’t forget doing that. To access the Facebook app, just log in to your account and go to the link here
Chat up a live parrot on Facebook
Few things warm the heart quite like a goofy publicity stunt. P.T. Barnum once had an elephant plow a field. German phone manufacturer Gigaset is right on Barnum's wavelength. Animals get attention. In this particular case, the animal is a chatty British Gold Macaw on Facebook.
OK, let's review. We have a parrot. We have Facebook. Put the two together in a live-chat format and you get people from around the world jawing with a bird over the Internet's most popular social-networking site.
I had the opportunity to briefly interview the bird (actually, it's a team of three birds taking different shifts). Certain keywords are likely to set him off. I was instructed that he likes peanuts, but that he was much more interested in the topics of chocolate and dogs.
In all this excitement, it might be easy to forget exactly why we're talking to a bird on Facebook in the first place. The parrot is supposed to pitch Gigaset's new L410 hands-free clip for cordless phones. He's a lousy pitchman. His obsession with chocolate completely overrides his ability to speak eloquently about the clip's tech specs.
For the record, the L410 is designed for home use and can be clipped to your clothes as a wearable speakerphone. It works with DECT-GAP phones and runs 49.99 euros. Germans gets first crack at it this month.
Now, back to the bird. The parrots will be on duty until the 9th of May between 3 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT. There are a few simple rules. Be patient. Don't swear. He won't answer questions about his personal life, but topics such as biscuits and chickens are OK.
Your friends will want proof. Make sure your Webcam is in good working order and you will end up with a video of yourself talking to the parrot to spread around on YouTube and Facebook. This is viral marketing, after all.

Facebook, Baidu ink deal to create new Web site?
Facebook has signed a deal with search engine Baidu to launch a Chinese Web site, reports out of the country claim.
According to Sohu News (translated page), which cited anonymous sources, the two companies will deliver a new site that is not running on or connected to Facebook.com. The report didn't say how Baidu would come into play, but given that company's reach--it operates the most popular search engine in China--it could help the new site get off the ground quite quickly.
Even so, Facebook's reported move into China would be quite interesting. Currently, the social network, along with Twitter and YouTube, is blocked in China because of the country's censorship regulations.
This isn't the first time that reports have been swirling about the possibility of Facebook jumping into the Chinese market. Back in 2007, reports claimed Facebook was trying to buy Chinese social network, Zhanzuo. The company denied the claim at the time. Later that year, Facebook acquired a Chinese domain name, which due to censorship issues, has not been put into use.
Rumors of this latest deal first started cropping up last week when reports surfaced saying that Facebook was in talks with companies in China. At the time, the social network told Bloomberg that China is very much on its radar but wouldn't confirm any potential deal.
"We are currently studying and learning about China, as part of evaluating any possible approaches that could benefit our users, developers and advertisers," a Facebook spokesperson told Bloomberg last week.

Warner Bros. to deliver movies on Facebook
Warner Bros. is apparently hoping to attract new fans by offering movies for viewing on Facebook.
The movie studio announced this evening it would begin testing a program that would offer movies for sale or rental for a brief period through its fan pages on the social-networking giant.
Beginning tomorrow, Facebook users can use Facebook Credits to rent "The Dark Knight" through the movie's official fan page on the social-networking site, Warner said in statement. The movie can be rented for 30 Facebook credits or $3, and Facebook users will have access to the movie for 48 hours through their accounts on the social network.
Facebook Credits is an alternative payment option for more than 150 games and applications on the social network. It's supported by games such as FarmVille and Mafia Wars, as well as Bejeweled Blitz and Madden NFL Superstars. Most titles still allow gamers to pay with credit cards, but it's Facebook's hope that eventually, users will buy all virtual goods with Credits.
The studio sees the social network as fertile ground for video on demand--considered a key revenue source for Hollywood studios grappling with falling box office receipts.
"Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people," Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said in a statement. "Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network."
Facebook representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In addition to being able to pause the movie and resume it at their leisure when they log back in to Facebook, Warner Bros. said users will still be able to post comments on the movie and interact with friends on the network while watching their selection.
The program is currently available only in the U.S., and additional titles will be added on a regular basis over the coming months, Warner Bros. said.

Facebook beefs up Like button
The social-networking giant recently released an update that adds Share button functionality to the Like button, perhaps presaging the phasing out of the Share button. When a Facebook user clicks the Like or Recommend button on a third-party site, a full feed story with headline, blurb, and thumbnail is generated on the user's wall. Users will also have the option of commenting on it.
Previously, unless third-party publishers chose the Like with Comment version of the button for their site, users got only a link to the story in their recent activity section on their wall. Now the Like, Share, and Recommend buttons will all generate the full story with headline, blurb, and thumbnail.
The change should drive more referral traffic to third-party sites and perhaps reduce user confusion over how the buttons work. But because the content will now be more prominent on user's walls, some may be more reluctant to click the Like button.
Facebook is apparently no longer supporting development of the Share button, having removed it from the developers documentation section of the site, and a search for Facebook Share in the developers section redirects to the Like button documentation page.
Facebook representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Egyptian names baby 'Facebook'
t's a charming reminder that new life grows even after the hardest times. An Egyptian baby has been named "Facebook" to celebrate the importance of the Web in the struggles of Egypt's people as its citizens cast off long-standing oppression.
The Internet proved an invaluable tool to ignite protest into revolution in Egypt in January. Social-media services such as Facebook and Twitter were used by brave protesters to organize dissent, while services such as Flickr and YouTube allowed Egyptians to show what was happening at street level even when the government attempted to shut down the Internet.

Zuckerberg's Facebook Page Hacked
It happened to Julian Assange when someone got into his personal dating records in December. So why should it be so strange that someone hacked into Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook account?
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Zuckerberg is so busy telling the rest of us how safe and secure our private information is in Facebook. Just a little ironic. At some point Tuesday, someone hacked onto Zuckerberg's fan page on Facebook and left this message:
"Let the hacking begin. If facebook (sic) needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a 'social business' the way Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus described it? [Link] What do you think? #hackercup2011"
Before the hacked prose was taken down, more than 1,800 people "liked" it. Facebook has made no public statement about the episode, probably to save Zuckerberg from embarrassment. The hacked statement most likely referred to the fact that Goldman Sachs was slated to buy shares of Facebook stock for its best customers. The program hit a snag recently and it's unclear whether the investment firm will go ahead as planned with the Facebook buy-ins.
Besides Zuckerberg and Assange being hacked, French president Nicolas Sarkozy's Facebook page was also hacked early this week. It said on his wall that he would not run for re-election. Sarkozy denied the fact and said "no system is infallible."
Facebook is trying to step up security and posted a blog called "A Continued Commitment to Security." It draws attention to Data Privacy Day, which is this Friday.

Get Facebook Updates Without Login Into Website
Do you wants to get facebook updates without being on the social network website? The answer is "Yes", Now you can get your friends’ status updates even when you can’t have the social network site open in your browser, like when you are at the office or outside at home? A new application called Facebook Desktop can do it for you easily.
When friends post updates, comment on a photo, create a new tag or do anything else that would trigger a story to go out to others’ newsfeeds, Facebook Desktop users will receive notifications on their desktops; similar to how instant messages appear.
Facebook Desktop also sends notifications about new messages, group invites, event invites and friend requests. The application works on both Windows and Apple platforms.
You can download Facebook Desktop Application here for free.
Chris Bihis, an engineer at Adobe, in a post on WebProNews says;
I moved away from my home in Vancouver for work and so Facebook has been a great tool to help keep me in touch with everyone. I found, though, that the browser metaphor for the Facebook ‘stream’ just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t like refreshing my home page constantly to see what people were up to. I also didn’t like keeping a browser open whenever I wanted to read some of my friend’s posts. So, I made a simple AIR app that hits the Facebook APIs, grabs the latest posts, and delivers them to me in an unobtrusive way. I ended up finding it so useful, I started adding more and more features, like the ability to pause or resume, replay missed notifications, update my status, etc. Eventually, I was encouraged by a friend to polish it up and release it for others to use, and so here we are!

Switch To New Facebook Profile Layout Design
Most of the facebook users have already switched to the new Facebook Profile Layout, But not everyone getting the chance to switch to the new facebook profile version. So now facebook is prompting the facebook users to switch to the new Facebook Profile Layout and facebook intimating everyone to do so.
People who haven’t yet chosen to upgrade to the new profile layout will lose that right to choose in a couple of days. Today on top of the home page of Facebook, these individuals were greeted with a note, starting with a bold headline saying, “Coming Soon: Your New Profile.”
Among the key changes in the ''new'' layout are: the addition of a quick summary at the top of each profile which lists at-a-glance details like where you work, where you live, relationship status and birthday; a row of recently tagged photos; a move away from tabs, with previously tabbed items shifted to the left; and more room for family and significant others to be highlighted.
The note continues, “In the next few days you’ll be upgraded to the new profile, which offers more ways to show and tell your story.” Facebook’s official blog also contains a post about the forced migration to the layouts:
Last month, we introduced the new profile, which now makes it even easier for you to tell your story and learn about your friends. For the month of December, we gave people the option to upgrade to the new profile early, and hundreds of millions of you made the switch. Starting today, we’ll be rolling out the new profile to everyone.

Facebook Revenue & Google Revenue Comparison
Two most promising and popular Website in the word of Internet Facebook and Google share same popularity and fan following all over the world, But there is something people should aware about their Revenue Comparison.
Facebook is now become one of the top competitor of Google and sometime internet expert thinks that they are true competitors, Despite the fact Facebook is slated to pull in $2 billion dollars in revenue this year, it’s behind where Google was six years after launch according to a recent report.
Facebook is said to be worth $59.4 billion. Some are saying that Facebook may be a bigger money maker than Google, and private investors are scrambling to get a share of the stock that has surged over the past couple years thanks to private markets like SecondMarket, Second Shares, and other deals taking place behind closed doors.
But check out the following comparison chart below. Looking at Facebook’s revenue growth compared to other online-advertising-driven monster companies like Google and Yahoo, it appears Facebook is well behind where Google was when the company was Facebook’s age.
Business Insider explain the slow growth in the beginning: “It’s true that Facebook did not emphasize revenue early in its early years, but neither did Google.”

Facebook Vs. Twitter - Users Statistics 2010
The Year 2010 was the revolutionary year for Social Networking, and two most successful social networking website of 2010 Facebook and Twitter are likely to get most users all over the world. Digital Surgeons took a short survey and describe the statistic demographics report about Facebook vs. Twitter (A Breakdown of 2010).
It’s no surprise that a higher percentage of Twitter users ‘update their status’ every day than Facebook, being that updating your status is the only way to actually use Twitter. For all you businesses out there, pay attention to the fact that 40% of all people on Facebook follow a brand, and 51% of those people will actually purchase a product or service from a specific brand. My speculation is that these numbers will go up at least 50% by end of next year as companies get smarter and continue to re-prioritize how and why they do business.
